Title - Origins of Customs

India is a country of customs, traditions & rituals. I will share one instance of how the customs usually take birth in our day-to-day lives...

Consider 'marriage' in a country of ours. Here marriage is a process of series of customs and reets and rasams .It operates one by one just like a line production in a factory. How could my marriage have been different...

It was a morning of  22nd Nov. 1997, the day of  my marriage. As usual the house was full of relatives and was comparable to a dhaba of any highway. I woke up and saw everybody  busy in his or her own preparation. No one was caring about me, although I was the dullah. It crossed limits when I could not find my chappal on the floor of my room, one of my relatives would have got the opportunity while I was asleep .Any way I started searching for some other chappal in the house but could not find any. Suddenly I found one pair of chappal in my rack but it was full of dust just because it was very old and a situation like this had never arisen before to make use of it .The same thing happened when I looked for my shirt and trouser. Finally all dressed up when I saw the mirror I was looking like a servant of the house rather than the young smart dullah. "No problem" I thought, because I had to move in and around till Haldi Gota Rasm. I was admired by everyone and I could guess with their expressions that how handsome I was looking. Somehow I passed that difficult time. The Haldi Gota Rasm was held successfully and so was my marriage in the days to come.

Now lets move on to another day, 13th April 1998. This was a day of another marriage in our family. Actually it was the marriage of my cousin brother. Naturally we had to go there in the morning for the same Haldi Gota Rasm. When my cousin, meaning the dullah woke up, my mami ji screamed at him when she saw him wearing new clothes and chappal. She ordered him to wear old clothes and chappal rightaway, which by the way she had arranged a day before. I must say that I praised the observation skills of my mami ji during my marriage. So in this way the custom of wearing old clothes & chappal before Haldi Gota Rasm had taken birth.

A great deal has been made of in alternative archaeology books about how and why our technologically primitive ancestors were able to carve out, transport and erect massive multi-ton stone blocks into megalithic monuments. Since there is no doubting the existence of these structures, our ancestors must of in fact possessed an advanced technology or had assistance from those who did (i.e. – ‘ancient astronauts'). That runs contrary to scholarly archaeology. But the questions remain.
