Tailgating, a Great Way to Have Fun With Your Family and Friends

No matter what time of year it is, tailgating is a great way to share a terrific time with your friends, support your team or just have a lot of fun. While this type of event is usually found only in the USA, it is beginning to grow in popularity all of over the world.

Tailgating gets its name from the practice of using the tailgate of a pickup to hold drinks and food during the party. They are most commonly found outside of sporting events and in some cases, fans will arrive hours early just to make sure they have enough time to take part in a tailgating party.

These parties range in size from just a few friends to hundreds of people. Beer is typically present as well as barbecue foods, sandwiches, chips and other food that is easy to eat standing up. Some people do bring chairs, but typically any sitting is done right on the tailgate. Some of the more rowdy parties will include gin buckets or big buckets of mixed drinks that are shared by everyone there.

Tailgating games are also taking on popularity. Many party participants will bring along a football or a Frisbee and spend their time playing a little before the big game starts. In fact, some times, these little matches become competitive, with neighboring tailgating parties engaging in some friendly scrimmages before a game.

Although some sporting events like the Superbowl have banned tailgating parties to avoid security risks, it is still easy to find one if you’re interested. In one strange case, fans of the Santa Fe Opera held tailgating parties all throughout the opera’s season. College games are a great place to find a party or you can usually find one outside of a concert.

If you are new to tailgating, it’s always a nice idea to bring a little something with you. In a way, these parties are very much like potluck suppers. Everyone brings something to chip in and then it is freely shared by everyone that shows up. This is a great way to make new friends or keep in touch with old ones.

If you’re really strapped for a tailgating party, try holding one in your own neighborhood. This is a great way for neighbors to get to know one another and can be the start of a great block party or an annual tradition.
