First, you need to know how currency is written. The Forex market is a trading market so currencies are always quoted in pairs. The syntax is base currency/quote currency. The base currency is always equivalent to 1 and the quote currency is how many units are needed to buy 1 of the base currency. For instance, EUR/USD = 1.39 means that it takes $1.39 in U.S. currency to equal 1 Euro. When trading, the base currency is also the basis of the trade. If you are buying EUR/USD you are buying Euros and selling U.S. dollars.
Bid, ask and spread are the next important fundamentals. They relate to the price that a dealer is willing to buy or sell the base currency in exchange for the quote. Bid is the buying price and is always lower than the ask, which is the selling price. The spread is the difference between the two. Since the bid is always lower than the ask, if you traded back and forth all day with no change in rates you would lose money with every trade. However, rates never stay the same. Fluctuations within the countries’ economies as well as the global market mean that the rates and spread are constantly changing.
The adage of “buy low, sell high” applies to the Forex market. If you think that a certain currency will increase in value over another then you want to buy the strengthening currency with the intention of selling it back at the higher price. If you feel a currency is weakening then you want to sell it before it loses any more value.
