Disaster Recovery Planning for Your Business

Anyone that has a business needs to think about disaster recovery planning. These plans are also referred to as business continuity plans, or business process contingency plans.

These plans lay out how your company can and will deal with potential disasters. It’s not just the steps to take after a disaster happens in order to get back on track, but it also details what your organization will do in order to minimize the impact a disaster will have on it. Spending a small amount of your business’s budget on disaster recovery planning now can help you to avoid much larger losses when one hits.

Fires, floods, tornados, and other natural disasters may be the first things that come to mind, but they’re only one type of disaster that you have to prepare for. Man-made disaster can pose a large threat to businesses as well. Security holes in a computer system, for example, can allow a virus to get into your company’s system. Faulty wiring or a sudden power surge can cause you to lose power, or potentially cause important electronic devices to fail. Keep these things in mind whenever you’re thinking about disaster recovery planning.

There are no set in stone one size fits all plans that you can immediately put into place. Each plan will be different, depending upon your business’s setup and individual needs. There are, however, three control measures that you can keep in mind when you begin to work on your disaster recovery plan – Preventative measures, detective measures, and corrective measures. Preventative measures are aimed at preventing any problems from occurring. Detective measures are aimed at discovering unwanted events before they become a bigger problem. Corrective measures focus on restoring your system and correcting any problems that may arise.

With these three things in mind, you can begin working on your disaster recovery planning.
