Role and responsibilities of wholesale representatives

Posted: Nov 15, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

If you are good at marketing (or selling to be more precise) and interested in making your living while working in the wholesale sector, you may consider working as a wholesale representative. A wholesale representative usually works as a sales rep for a wholesaler or wholesale distributor business. While some wholesale representatives may choose to work as freelance agent for more than one business, depending upon the nature of the job and the agreement. A wholesale representative job is pretty much the same as any other sales person's job and that is to visit prospective customers, and trying to convince them into buying from your respective company. Once the relation is established and the business starts purchasing from your business, the job will get a lot simpler. For example, going to the shop, taking orders, contacting the wholesalers you are working with and passing on the orders. You will be getting a basic salary plus some fixed commission on each sale that you will bring to the company.

To work as a wholesale representative, you need to be either exceptionally good at the art of selling or you must be having sufficient knowledge and experience of the same industry. Just like any other sales representative, one needs to posses strong communication skills. For that purpose, most business degrees have a separate course dedicated to business communication. To further enhance your communication skills you can go for some special certification. Regardless of any contemporary education, some people are naturally gifted when it comes to making presentation and convincing others. You can also learn a great deal by going with senior sales staff and observing their tactics. Sales experience is a must in most cases (especially when you are looking to work for a reputable wholesale company), however you do not need to have sales experiences if you are looking to work as a freelance commission agent.

Remember, a sales representative job is not particularly hard to get, but such jobs are not always highly paid (at least not in the beginning). In the start, you'll have to rely mostly on sales commissions, which mean that you should be ready to work really hard to earn good monthly income. It is only after the passage of time and lots of sales, that you will start getting offers from big wholesale companies to work as a sales agent, but till then it is going to be an uphill struggle.
