However, as a parent, have you ever wondered what brilliant ideas are being kept hidden from the scene of vending machines? I'm not talking about snacks. I'm talking about something much more useful to the average parent who is out and about and always on the go.
I've seen the vending machines at local malls that offer snacks and random baby accessories such as powdered formula in the amount needed for a bottle. I've seen the pacifiers for the unfortunate souls that didn't notice as Junior's binky was tossed over the side of the stroller, but who is now in a frenzy because it is very much needed. I've seen the assorted snacks for the toddler who passes by and immediately requires a package of animal crackers and, obviously, this is a necessary service; I've been the victim of a forgotten snack many a time. It isn't a pretty thing, especially in a public place.
What I have not seen is the service provided within the confines of the public restrooms. Sure, you have the vending machines that offer the feminine hygiene products or the contraceptive devices. And, no, I wouldn't expect that snacks would be a readily available item in a restroom because, well, hygiene is always an issue. The bathrooms that have the baby changing stations will sometimes, on occasion, have a machine that offers a single diaper for a price well worth it for those bringing in the wearer of a soiled one. It's not something you always think of as needed when leaving the house for a "quick trip."
But - yes, but - what about the parents whose child, like mine, insists that that diaper is not nearly enough to contain that which they are emitting? "Blow-out" is the common phrase used for such incidents, and trust me when I say that there has been many a time when I wished that the vending machine services meant something other than offering a quick snack.
The genius idea would be to offer, in these bathroom machines near the changing tables, a change of clothes. Even if it's just a pair of footed pyjamas that snap up the front, it would be a much better option than carrying a poo-covered infant through the store (and thus, transferring much of it onto either yourself or their car seat). They're cheap enough wholesale to offer at a reasonable price for desperate parents. I would definitely pay about $5 for the sake of not having my baby being toted about in soiled clothing. Then maybe, on the way out, we can stop for the snack services offered at that other vending machine.
