Just the other day, I almost jumped out of my skin. Short of losing my portable hard disk, which I have on a few occasions, this time I actually lost ALL my files while my hard disk was safely attached to my desktop. How is it possible you say. Blame it my pudgy fingers, my wondering mind, or perhaps due to my sleep debt which has accumulated to slightly over 24 hours. I couldn’t believe that I accidentally deleted all my files in my work folder with just one careless click!
And of all times, when I was two days behind print deadline. Cover shot, photo shoot pictures, articles, all the final artwork for the magazine – gone. Can you imagine the agony? In my haste, I didn’t back up all the files anywhere else. Going around amassing all these files again was going to hold back production way too long. I was practically left for dead. Desperate, I took the hard disk, gave it a few hard knocks and tried to access the files again. Zilch. My work folder was spanking clean.
So after the hullabaloo made in office, I knew the only chance of recovering the files (and also my job - which was definitely the most critical) was if I started to think straight – which was a big feat considering my current state of silent bedlam still going on inside my head. After random ‘googling’ hoping to find some hope on the internet. Within the 1st page, I found a potential saviour. A FREE TRIAL software that promised to ‘recover 100% of my data – quickly and easily . I downloaded it – and ran the application. It took me quite awhile to figure out how to start the program… so much for being easy.
After fumbling around for 10 minutes, I finally got the software to start scanning my hard disk. It took like eternity (okay it was around 1 hr) before it threw out a result. YES! It managed to locate like 5 of my files (out of 20+?) within the hard disk. I proceeded to click “recover” and then a pop up window froze me in my tracks.. So much for being a FREE solution. And they only could recover like less than half of my files! Despair soon replaced the fuming madness. My heart sank.
Decided to give google a last ditch effort – typed in “Desperate help needed recover deleted files” which truly represented how I felt. This time, another data recovery software popped up in the 1st page. ADRC data recovery software tools http://www.adrc.com/software/data_recovery_tools/index.html - which looked as promising and was screaming out “FREE!”. I didn’t want to celebrate too soon though. I proceeded to download the software, and it was surprisingly easy to use!
A few clicks, and it was scanning my hard disk – and within a short while – ADRC triumphantly declared that it found 20+ files during the scan. I was like omg! There was light!! I proceeded to click ‘recover’ , half expecting some stupid prompt for payment. I was resigned enough to pay whatever fee it wanted at this moment. Seen one data recovery software, seen ‘em all.
BUT amazingly, there was no popup. There was no prompt for payment. There was… nothing! Just the quiet whirling of the progress bar which indicated that the recovery was in progress. I gave my silent prayer of thanks. In a matter of minutes, every single ‘deleted’ file was recovered!
Then came the litmus test. In great trepidation, I double clicked on my word file… it felt like eternity…. And it opened successfully! I have never been so relieved. I recovered my data, I kept my job and I managed to deliver the magazine to the printers in time. Nothing short of miraculous I must say.
