Posted: Dec 30, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

File system of our computer is meant to store and manage data in the storage media. As all information for accessing the data in the media lies with the file system, any instance of corruption/damage to the file system results in the loss or inaccessibility of the troubled partitions or volumes of the storage media. On the parts of normal users and even sometimes in case of experienced users, corruption of file system leading to the loss or inaccessibility of partitions are very critical to handle. In such cases, any partition recovery software can be immensely helpful in recovering your valuable data back.

Among many instances of file system corruption, during the open, delete or rename operation of a file using either the file manager or the command prompt, an error message flashes on the screen leading to the complete inaccessibility of data. The error message that one may encounter can be any of the following:

<drive>:\<folder> is not accessible.
OR
The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable.The file or directory is corrupt and non-readable.
OR
The file or directory \<folder> is corrupt and unreadable.
Please Run the Chkdsk utility.

Cause:

The possible reason behind the above error messages can be the corruption/damage to the file allocation table or the file system index.

Resolution:

Use the command-line utility 'chkdsk' to repair the damaged/corrupted file allocation table and file system index. Following steps may guide you through:
Go to the 'START' button and then click on the 'RUN' button.
In the command-line type 'chkdsk/f <drive no> and click on the 'OK' button.

Note: In the above step, the <drive no> represents the troubled drive. For a large volume or the entire hard disk, the process of repairing by 'chkdsk' may take several minutes to hours.

Sometimes, if the drive or the disk is severely corrupted, chkdsk exits without doing anything. In such as case, you need to run chkdsk with the '/f' option. However, this option may cause data loss and if you do not have valid backup, then, only partition recovery can help you recover your data from the troubled partitions.

Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery is an efficient as well as reliable partition recovery utility to recover back all your lost, deleted, formatted or inaccessible data back from the troubled drive irrespective of the data loss situation. The software is capable of recovering your data from any FAT, NTFS, NTFS5 and VFAT file system based volume.
