So before we start trying to diagnose a hard drive hardware malfunction and doing hard drive data recovery step we need to eliminate all possiblities that it might be a software related issue. We are not going to get into virus scanning and all that but do good research and eliminate any software related issues, before preceding.
One hardware issue that it would be is a malfunctioned PCB, printed cirucuit board on the drive. The other would probably be the moving parts inside the drive, the motors, the arm, or the platters.
Usually one can hear if it might be a motor problem or a moving parts problem. They moving parts will probably make a ticking type sound or a scraping sound that you can hear. If you happen to notice this type of sound do not power up the hard drive gain, you can do great damage to it, and never be able to do hard drive data recovery.
Most likely if it is PCB problem you will not hear anything in the drive as it will probably not turn on. So listen and see if the hard drive is very quiet. The platters under the copper wire will not spin. Mostly likely this is the best case scenario when doing hard drive data recovery because you can replace the printed circuit board fairly easy without opening up the hard drive.
If in the event you do need a business who is very good at hardware data recovery, you need to do your research on that company. Make sure to get an upfront estimate from them or atleast before they go ahead and start trying to do the hard drive data recovery. Make sure the company has a website, phone number, and physical mailing address, these are a must.
Hard Drive data recovery might not always be possible. However if you do all the right things and dot your "i's" and cross your "t's" you will give yourself the best chance for hard drive data recovery to be a success.
