How to Recover those deleted files

Posted: Jan 30, 2012 |

Creating a backup of files is important to avoid data loss in case files get deleted accidentally. The 'System restore' utility in Windows can help one recover system files and settings to a certain extent. But at times, the recovery process may fail if restore points were not created. However, to avoid such losses we have collected and reviewed some useful software that can help recover deleted files with ease.

Undelete Plus

Undelete Plus is the most common utility used to recover deleted files. It is a freeware and can be downloaded from SoftPedia.

It is simple to use and it supports all Windows file systems like FAT16, FAT32, NTFS and NTFS5. You can also recover data from flash drives. Let's take a look at how to go about using this utility.

Download the setup from the site. Double-click this file and follow these steps:

  • Select the drive from where ff the file was deleted.
  • Click the ellipsis button and browse for an appropriate location to save the file.
  • To set a search criteria, click the 'Filter' tab on the main interface and set appropriate options as required.
  • Once done, click 'Start Scan'. Once the scanning process has been completed, the application will list files based on their extension or category.
  • To restore a particular file, select the checkbox next to the file and click 'Start Undelete'.

Also don't forget to checkout other recovery tools like Recuva, Handy Recovery, Restoration, etc.

Things to Remember Before Attempting Recovery

Before using any of the above tools to recover data it is necessary to stop working on the partition from where the file was deleted. If a write operation has been performed on the drive after the file has been deleted, it may not be possible to recover the deleted file. This is because the block on the hard drive from where the file was deleted might be overwritten by another file, thus erasing every trace of data which was earlier present on it. Therefore, if you're trying to recover a file from drive 'C', for instance, make sure you save the file on drive 'D' to avoid write operations and to successfully recover the file. This precaution should be taken as soon as you realize that the file has been deleted.
