Inability of Compact.exe Tool to Compress File System Cause Data Loss in Windows

NTFS (New Technology File System) file system allows you to compress or compact files on the hard drive. It is possible through Compact.exe tool in Microsoft Windows. It is a command line utility that come bundled with NTFS file system. As the name states, this tool allows system administrators to compress or compact the files. You can use this command with many parameters to view or modify compression state of the NTFS partitions. But in some situations, you might encounter some errors while compressing the files that might possibly cause data loss on Windows hard drive. In such circumstances, you need to carry out windows data recovery to retrieve lost data from Windows hard drive.

This file compression tool does not enable you to compress files on an NTFS file system partition if the allocation unit is more than 4 KB. If you try to compact or compress such partitions, you might following error message, which states that compression is not possible:

The file system does not support compression”

The size of allocation unit is defined when you format your NTFS file system partition, so that MS Windows could use it as a smallest amount of hard drive space to allocate to any file. However, when you do not specify the size of allocation unit, the default size of allocation unit will be taken that is 4096 bytes. But if you define larger size of the allocation unit, you will not be able to compress the files. This situation could eventually cause data loss on Windows hard drive and need Windows Recovery to be sorted out.

You can find out the size of allocation unit by using the ChkDsk utility. If the size is greater than 4 KB, NTFS file system partition needs to be reformatted to redefined the allocation unit size and compress the NTFS partition.

Although, this method will resolve the problem, but also cause serious data loss. Formatting removes all of the data from hard drive and lead to absolute data loss. In such cases, Windows Data Recovery Software come for your help to retrieve lost data.
