Windows chkdsk utility checks and corrects file system errors. During the Windows bootup process, if any of the Windows partitions is corrupt (or not formatted with a Windows compatible file system), chkdsk can detect it and prompt corresponding error messages. In Windows Vista, a user may encounter an error related to partition health as:
"One of your partitions is corrupted, press a key within 7 seconds to skip chkdsk"
In this case, if the user chooses to continue running chkdsk, the system boots fine. The problem comes as one of the logical partitions go missing. Attempting to access it through Windows explorer gives another error message:
"Drive_name is not accessible, the file or directory is corrupted, please try again"
The above error message reports partition corruption that needs Partition Recovery to restore data. This issue may arise due to incompatibility between file system and operating system. This is the reason why Windows may declare the partition as corrup and/or inaccessible.
To resolve this issue, we can manually run chkdsk to repair the partition corruption in case of logical errors. But, it has been found that utility prompts errors instead of repairing it. Chkdsk can not access the partition in problems viz. disk initialization errors, incompatible file system issues etc. Thus, the disk can’t be accessed and to restore the data we need to use an updated backup. In case the backup is not up-to-date or was never taken, to recover the data a user should opt for Partition Recovery Software.
