Ever wanted your friend as a pet? HumanPets.com is a new website that lets you do just that, as well as meet a lot of new fun people along the way. The site launches today, after nearly a year in development.

In the Human Pets virtual community, all users are pet animals. They can be bought, fed, combed, pet, taken on trips, nicknamed, and more. Added into the mix are an array of games, chat rooms, discussion boards, an auction house, and virtual shops. In all, it's a very fun and fast way for teens and young adults to make new friends from around the world, or locally from their areas too.

Human Pets also includes some very fun features that make the site especially fun for making friends online. The auction system can be used to exchange post cards, language lessons, drawings, and chat sessions for virtual points. Users earn these virtual points by spending time on the site. The new social network also features "herds," in which users can form similar interest groups and discuss the latest news. All herds contain discussion boards and chat rooms. The site also features its own classifieds section, where users can advertise their pets for sale, or post personals, and search for fun parties and events. Lastly, users also have their own mini-blogs, where they can update friends on their latest daily activities. In a sense, the site is an entire virtual town, inhabited by humans being animals. Built entirely in the last year, Human Pets uses modern Web 2.0/AJAX technology to add excitement and interactivity.

Although HumanPets.com just launched today, it has been in existence for about a year as a very popular Facebook application. The site gained over 1.5 million registered users, and has actually helped several couples get married. Many users mentioned it being their only reason to visit Facebook, spending several hours on the site per day. And so having outgrown the Facebook garden, the application has now grown into its own independent website.

Human Pets is part of a new form of websites known as social online gaming. The website experience is no longer a solitary one, but a very interactive one surrounded by friends and other users.
