The excitement and enthusiasm about online dating is understandable. Not just from the point of view of the people raking in the money (online dating by the end of this year is expected to pass the one billion dollar mark in revenue generation) but by the participants who are floored by the nearly unlimited amount of choices and chances to meet that special someone. All of this from the privacy and safety of your own computer. Online dating has changed the relationship parameters like nothing before.
It's new but that does not stop people from bringing some of their old habits to the party. More specifically the way they deal with their previous relationships.
Sure they are online to get a fresh start and that does not mean they put on an act and try to be someone they are not. One of the keys to online dating success is to be as real as possible. But singing the blues about what happened before is not going to have many people rushing to find out more about you. This means:
1. How It Broke
You have gotten to the point where you can remember the exact time and date you broke up as well as what was said verbatim. It's almost like a tape recorder and you turn it on without being prompted by your cyber dates. Even if they just met you online ten minutes ago, that routine can get old very quickly.
2. Why It Broke
This is the one where you start exploring the intricate dynamics of the previous relationship. Who was at fault and why; what they should have said; what you should have done and all the other less than exciting details. The thing to keep in mind is you are trying to meet someone new for a potential dating relationship. You are not online to find a therapist and they are not there looking for a patient to counsel.
3. The Untouchable
It takes two to tango and unless you were the ultimate jerk then the chances are that you and your ex share responsibility for the break up. Yet you go online and you dazzle (also known as bore) your cyber date with stories of your ex's incredibleness. Okay they are wonderful. You never met anyone like them. In your spare time write their biography. In the meantime while you are online, stop singing their praises and concentrate on the person on the other side of the computer monitor who is trying to get to know you better. Just maybe if you give them half a chance they are just as incredible as your ex.
What's done is done. Yet many people continue to carry the torch for their ex. But just remember everyone needs a brand new start from time to time in their lives and online dating can be a golden opportunity to do so. If you want to carry the torch fine but doing so can sometimes blind you to what's in front of you.
