Online dating serves are experiencing a hype exceeding all expectations in terms of user numbers and revenues.Revenues from dating services are expected to exceed US$1bn globally, according to a report published by Juniper research.
The report also predicts the number users of online and mobile dating services like the Australian site AdultsOnly.com.au to rise globally from just over 40 million to 260 million in 2012.
Online dating services obviously have found a place in our society and are here to stay. But the nature of technology is being superseded as soon as published, so the next big thing in matchmaking technology, mobile dating, looms on the horizon.
In the current state the relationship between mobile dating and online dating shows two scenarios: established online dating service websites are introducing a mobile phone service to complement their online presence. But there are also movements towards a pure mobile dating service, where a functional website beyond a sign up interface is no longer necessary.
In the US services like ‘I love texting.com’ and ‘meetmoi.com’ only require for users to upload a profile and you’re in the process of matchmaking without spending valuable time in front of the PC. Mobility and flexibility once again to taking a good concept one step further….
These mobile dating applications at the moment are rather flirty chat applications than serious dating services, but that’s because the mobile dating applications are far from well designed and are below critical mass. But this is likely to change. Mobile dating may eventually overtake internet dating for one simple reason: because mobile computing will eventually overtake fixed computer (PC/laptop) usage. Laptops will morph into palmtops and be unified with cell phones and mp3 players. This process is likely to take some years from now but seems to be inevitable. Location based services and video dating will make mobile dating more compelling. And a few mobile enabler services are working on video dating right now.
