6 Ways to Lower Medical Debt Bills Through Negotiation & Cost Comparison

Get the Price Upfront

Speak to the physician prior to a test or procedure. At times, doctors my offer a discount on the fee, especially if two or more procedures are occurring. Additionally, if you are receiving treatments that may occur more than once, some physicians may offer a discount on these sessions, such as one free or a percentage off your total cost. It is important to speak to the physician prior to the procedure, not after the bill is formulated.

Offer a Cash Payment

Once again, offer to pay for services rendered in cash. Believe it or not, some medical care providers will be willing to receive cash payments. It is an easy and efficient way to receive a discount without having to maximize your credit cards.

Do Some Research

Look into your private insurance’s website regarding the cost of procedures and prescription medications. Their website should offer a list of in-network physicians to avoid paying extra for services not covered by your insurance. You should know this information prior to receiving treatment from the physician.

Discuss Payment Options

Speak to those in charge of billing, either in the doctor’s office or in the hospital, regarding options for payment. Also, flat out ask them if there are options for a discount. Generally speaking, the doctors are not the ones who are dealing with the cost, but those in the “back offices.” Perhaps explaining that you are short on money, may convince those to offer a reduction in price. You never know, especially this day with the state of the economy.

Scheduling Keys

Receiving treatment by certain physicians in “off” or “non-peak” months may result in a discounted rate. For example, if you are seeking cosmetic surgery, try going to a plastic surgeon in the winter months when business may be slower. In a busy practice, try to put yourself on a waiting list to fill an appointment when a cancellation may occur and the doctor’s office is in need of a replacement.

Have Support

A Health Care Advocate is someone who will be your supporter and do the work that you may not want to do or afraid to do. They will be your liaison to your medical care provider or hospital in negotiating a better price for you or cut costs when appropriate. Finding one may be difficult, so once again, do your research. You will have to pay for them to assist you, so if your budget is tight, this may not be the best option for you. Check their references prior to hiring them, but if they know what they are doing, a professional negotiator may be able to relinquish a better price in the end.
