How do I Stop the Debt Collection Phone Calls?

Posted: Jun 07, 2010 |

One of the most universal complaints among consumers who are behind on their debt payments is the persistent collection calls asking for money when they are struggling with their finances. The people who are hired to make these calls can be very aggressive, insulting and rude, and many of them are very good at what they do. They simply will not stop bothering you until they've extracted money that they want from you. This kind of harassment can lead to levels of stress that can jeopardize your personal relationships and even begin to affect your health. Many individuals in this position will begin to develop sleep disorders. Is this starting to sound a little too familiar?

What can be done to get you some relief from these collection calls? The answer is to engage the services of a debt professional to become involved in your situation. For instance, hiring an attorney who specializes in consumer debt will free you from the torrent of calls. The lawyer's office will take over the duties of communicating with your creditors. Hiring a debt settlement company can also bring some much-needed relief from both the phone calls and your debt. With time, your creditors will learn that the company is negotiating with them on your behalf to achieve a settlement on the debt in question, and the volume of calls should begin to dwindle to a much more tolerable level, if not come to an end altogether. The settlement company will establish a frequent and consistent level of communication with your creditors, who usually come to realize that collection calls are just a waste of time and money for them at that point. In addition, the settlements themselves they negotiate normally result in 40% to 60% of the debt owed. Think about how much stress that would relieve for you!

While they are not the most potent debt solution available, debt management companies (also known as consumer credit counseling agencies) can also bring some much-needed relief from the unwanted phone calls. In this case it is because these companies have close ties with the credit card companies and structure programs that pay back the balances owed in full. Obviously when the credit card companies are in the process of recovering all the money that the consumer owes them, they are willing to be less adversarial throughout the process. But be aware that if you are ever late with a payment once you're in a debt management program, the better treatment will usually come to an abrupt end. The consumer needs to be serious and committed to their credit card debt relief program.
