Should You Consolidate Credit Card Debt?

If you're currently overwhelmed by your credit card bills, you may wonder if it's a good choice to consolidate credit card debt.  Some have used this type of service for their own debt and have found good results with it, whereas others have had regrets.  As with any other financial arrangement, there are pros and cons to remember if you want to consolidate credit card debt.  Let's take a look at what those pros and cons are so you can make an informed decision in your own case.

Take Control of your Finances

Some positive aspects when you consolidate credit card debt include having your bills more organized and paying less every single month.  Sometimes when you have several credit card and other bills you can feel so overwhelmed with all of them that some get overlooked.  When you consolidate credit card debt you then have one bill you pay and are less likely to overlook anything.  This means you'll save on late fees and penalties because you missed paying a certain bill.  You may also get a great sense of accomplishment as you no longer get all those bills in the mail; this can alleviate some of the stress you feel when you're deeply in debt.

Benfit From Better Rates

When you consolidate credit card debt the consolidation service usually negotiates with banks and lenders for a smaller amount of debt and they then pass that savings onto you.  You also typically get a better interest rate with them so you're spending less money overall as time goes by.

Drawbacks to Debt Consolidation

So what is the downside when you consolidate credit card debt?  Very often a consolidation loan shows up on your credit report as a charge-off and this can have a negative affect on your credit rating.  Some people however are more concerned with actually paying off that debt rather than with their credit rating, so this is a decision each person needs to make individually.  Also, you may not be able to include every single loan and account when you consolidate credit card debt.  Not all banks and lenders will work with a consolidator and they're not legally obligated to do so.  This means that even when you consolidate credit card debt you will probably still need to pay on other cards and bills at the same time.

It's also good to remember that when you consolidate credit card debt this is a loan that must be repaid.  If you're in serious financial trouble because you just can't control your spending then you need to address this problem no matter what option you choose.  You might see your credit card debt go away only to fall behind on your consolidation loan, or may go out and get new credit cards and get yourself in financial trouble all over again.  When you consolidate credit card debt this doesn't absolve you of your financial obligations and responsibilities, so you need to make sure that you view it as an opportunity to get yourself back on track and not back into trouble.
