Tips On Settling Credit Card Debt

Posted: Mar 16, 2011 |

While it is true that settling credit card debt can be challenging, it is also good to know that it is possible and that you can actually come out ahead in the long run.  Some people are extremely confident and are willing to do the negotiations themselves.  However, many people prefer to use the services of a debt settlement company or a debt relief company.

If you are interested in reducing or eliminating some or all of your credit card debt, it is a good idea to be informed first.  If you are looking at a debt relief company, be sure that you really find out about it and what it can do for you.  You don't want to be taken in by a scam that simply wants your up-front fees and then doesn't actually work for you.  You want to go with a company that has a proven track record and that has a guarantee.  This type of company will refund your money if a settlement is not reached.

As for the settlement, that must be negotiated individually with each creditor.  Your debt settlement company will work with each individual company to arrange for the terms that are the best that can be agreed to.  You will be consulted to see if you are willing to agree to the terms.  Remember, if you agree then you are liable to fulfill the agreement as stated.  Your debt relief company will work to negotiate the interest rate and service charges as well as an adjustment to the principal.  Depending on the individual creditor, these things will be adjusted and you will have a new monthly payment that reflects the new amounts and payment schedule.

As you can see, although it may take time and effort, it can be well worth trying to settle credit card debts.  As long as you make your new payments in a timely fashion, things should go well.  However, if you do not make your payments on time, your creditors may take more aggressive action to collect what you owe, which may even include filing lawsuits against you.
