3 Tips to help you get over your fear of the Dentist

Posted: May 07, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Some people have a fear of the Dentist.  With some individuals, the fear may be a result of a prior bad dental experience.  Yet, with others, the fear and anxiety that they feel could be something that they simply create in their own mind.

Nevertheless, regardless of why the fear is present, the end result is that the fear is there and real.  Visiting the dentist on a regular basis is important and you should not miss any appointments.  Below are 3 tips that may help you reduce the fear that you feel when visiting the dentist.

1. Simple Relaxation:  This may seem like an obvious tip, and it is, but some people have a difficult time just relaxing.  There are many books on the market about deep breathing and relaxation techniques.  Visit your favorite online bookstore and see which books are receiving the best reviews.  A simple book on relaxation can go a long way to calming you.

2.  Visualization:  This approach can be similar to the last one.  Yet for this technique, you can pick your favorite place in the world to be.  In my case, I like to picture myself at the beach, with the waves crashing around and the smell of sea salt.  You can picture yourself at the ocean, or any place that you enjoy, and replace your fear with a tranquil and peaceful feeling.

3.  Awareness:  One possible reason for fear in the dentist office is the lack of understanding about what is happening to you.  As a result, don't be afraid to ask your dentist a few questions.  Understand that asking too many questions will slow the process and may distract the dentist.  However, asking a couple questions should be fine.  If you get some information about the procedure, you might feel more comfortable and not as concerned about things.

Feeling some anxiety going to the dentist can be normal.  As we all know, often the procedure is not something you would like to do with your free time.  Having any type of dental procedure in your mouth can get you a bit tense.  Yet, taking care of your teeth is very important and you should be as relaxed as possible when you visit the dentist.  The next time you visit a Worcester Dentist, keep these tips in mind.
