All you need to know about dental bridges

Dental bridges are actually false teeth, and they are used as a method of replacing one or more missing teeth by fixing them onto adjacent teeth. The false tooth is often referred as a pontic and is attached in between two crowns that aid as anchors by attaching to the teeth on each side of the false tooth, thereby bridging them together.

There are two parts in a typical dental bridge. A dental bridge basically contains a pontic or false tooth used to replace the missing tooth, which is made from gold, alloys, porcelain or a blend of these materials. And two crowns which helps to anchor the false tooth.

When you have one or more teeth missing that can has an impact on your smile, look and your speech. And it may change the shape of your face too. You will also experience difficulties in biting and chewing food as it may cause neighboring teeth to lean into the space of the missing tooth and change the way the upper and lower teeth bite together. There will be pieces of food collected in this space and you have a higher risk of getting gum disease and tooth decay.

So if you have a missing tooth or teeth you need to get them replaced as soon as possible. It not only helps you to enhance your look but also it can ease the strain on the teeth at either side of the missing tooth. By replacing missing teeth, you can stop the adjacent teeth from tilting into the gap and changing the bite. And it's an important step in avoiding gum disease and tooth decay too.

There are three kinds of dental bridges available.  They are the traditional fixed bridge, Resin-bonded bridge or Maryland-bonded bridge and the Cantilever bridge. Traditional fixed bridge is the most frequently used bridge and it contains a pontic attached between two porcelain crowns that are anchored on adjacent teeth or implants. The pontic is typically made of either porcelain bonded to metal or ceramics.  The Resin-bonded bridges or Maryland-bonded bridges are recommended when the missing tooth is in between the front teeth, or when the teeth on both sides of the missing tooth are robust and have no big fillings.  Plastic is the material used in the false tooth and it is fixed to metal bands that are attached to the adjoining teeth with the help of resin which cannot be seen. The third type, Cantilever bridges are recommended to close the gaps in front teeth that are prone to lesser strain. Dentists go for Cantilever bridges in situations  when there are teeth existing on just one side of the gap, so the false tooth is fastened to one or more neighboring teeth on one side.

There are several benefits of using dental bridges. Dental bridges have a more natural look. And to complete the treatment you only need two appointments with the dentist. They are durable, so you can expect them to last for a good 10-15 years, but you have to practice good dental hygiene. They can enhance your look and solve difficulties in biting and speech problems arising as consequences of missing teeth.

The main drawback of dental bridges is that your teeth may become slightly sensitive to high temperatures for a few weeks. And if you fail to maintain proper hygiene your teeth and gums are susceptible to infection as a result of amassing of bacteria due to the food acids.
