Bad Breath Guru explains what causes metallic or bitter taste in mouth

Ever wondered what the real causes of bad breath are? If you happen to taste something metallic, sour or bitter in your mouth, chances are that someone close to you might have smelt it as well. However, not everyone knows what causes bad breath. One of the biggest causes is halitosis. When halitosis causes bad breath, it can be a prolonged problem, especially if the person who has the condition is not even aware that he or she has it in the first place.

One of the explanations behind the taste disorders associated with bad breath is sulfur production. Anaerobic bacteria found in your mouth are responsible for producing these, which can be the causes of bad breath that people are found to generally avoid. While it has not been strictly proven as such, there have been Asian studies that have identified the sour, bitter and metallic tastes to be at the back of one’s mouth. While there is no concrete proof that these are halitosis causes, it is indeed a plausible theory as the anaerobic bacteria mentioned earlier grow at the back of the mouth, which is where the sour, metallic, and bitter tastes are also located.

Finding out what causes bad breath in relation to this phenomenon should also lead one to examine the senses of taste and smell. While they are two separate processes with different parts of the brain acting on these impulses, they are known to intermingle. This is exactly why people sometimes smell something stinky when there is really no stench at all, or the other way around. In the case of halitosis, one may smell his own breath and smell nothing bad, while the person next to him may detect the bad breath.

Once you find out about real halitosis causes or what causes bad breath and realize that you have it, you then know that you have to destroy the causes of bad breath by purchasing an oral rinse and gargling it regularly. These oral rinses are especially designed to be pH-balanced (as the sour, metallic and bitter tastes are all acidic) so that they negate the acidic effects of the sulfur produced at the back of your mouth.

Another possible solution to cure halitosis if your bad breath is much worse than the norm is to make use of baking soda—put a small amount of it on your toothbrush, cover it with toothpaste, and brush as normal. This is so that the baking soda can be an extra agent that neutralizes oral acidity for clean, fresh breath.

The key to curing bad breath is by actually doing something about it. Read up on the real culprits behind bad breath, as there are a lot of myths and preconceived notions that prevent people from correct diagnosis. Once you have diagnosed yourself, purchase a good oral rinse right away to get rid of halitosis once and for all.
