Bleeding Gums Causes

Gums are pinky and spongy structures, essential to hold and protect teeth. They adhere to the teeth very closely for sealing to prevent entry or spreading of the infection inside, to the root of the teeth or jaw bone.

Brushing or flossing too vigorously - The rough mechanical action of brushing or flossing too vigorously may damage and irritate the sensitive oral tissues which may cause gums to bleed. If the bleeding continues for a few days then it is important to visit a dentist immediately.

This brings up an important point. Bleeding gums are not normal at all. Usually, if your gums bleed while brushing or flossing it is probably indicative of gum disease.

Gingivitis is primarily caused by toxin producing bacteria on the teeth due to a lack of proper oral hygiene. Trauma caused by vigorous flossing, brushing, dentures, tooth picking, mouth fresheners, whiteners as well as mouth ulcers may also be blamed for causing bleeding.

Nutritional deficiency's and blood thinning and pain-killing medication are major role players in gum bleeds. Do not underestimate food or beverage heat or spiciness as some foods may possibly lead to severe irritation and bleeding.

Vitamin and mineral deficiencies as well as some medication in the form of blood thinner or pain-killers also have the possibility of causing bleeds. Steer clear from hot and spicy foods or beverages - they may cause severe irritation in turn leading to bleeding.

On an even more serious note, there has been evidence presented that there may be a link between gum disease and more severe health conditions. The bacteria can enter the blood stream from the gum tissue and this can have an impact on the body's inflammatory response.

If your gums ache or bleed you should talk to your dentist right away because gum disease is progressive, and once it gets started, no amount of brushing and flossing will turn it around. In the initial stages, gingivitis, the plaque and tartar can be removed at your dentist’s office during a routine cleaning.

A Call to Action A good many people sit idle while gum disease takes hold of their lives. They may notice the inflammation of their gums or they may notice that they are beginning to choose their foods more carefully; however, they proceed as if poor dental health is an inevitable outcome, the natural byproduct of age and an active lifestyle.

Evidence has been gathering and suggests that gum disease sufferers are also more prone to other health problems in the body. Possible links to serious illnesses have been suspected for some time now. This may be due to the fact that bacteria enters the bloodstream from the infected gum tissue.

If a dental professional does not treat these red and swollen gums, the condition can deteriorate to periodontal disease, which can attack the gums and bone surrounding the teeth, eventually leading to tooth loss. The natural space between your teeth and gums become infected. Pockets can form and this is where bacteria thrive.
