CEREC Technology: What it is and how it works

Posted: Nov 18, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

With the busy schedules and lifestyle everyone likes to get things done as quickly as possible. And dentistry is no exception, if you are thinking of a dental practice where you can go and get your new artificial tooth prepared and fixed, all during a single visit and within just an hour, now you have an answer. This is a reality with CEREC technology by Sirona Dental Systems UK. CEREC is an innovative system that allows a dentist to design, make and fix a new crown, veneer, onlay or inlay in just one visit, a process that would usually take a minimum of two weeks, if not more.

So, what exactly is this CEREC technology? Your dentist has to prepare your tooth in the usual way he or she would prior to fixing a crown or a veneer. But when it comes to taking the impression of your tooth, your dentist will use a special camera to take a digital image, eliminating the use of traditional "dental putty" to take an impression. This digital image will be transformed into a 3D computerized model of your tooth, which will serve as a guide to create your new tooth. When your dentist is satisfied with the newly designed tooth, this information is directed to an onsite milling machine, which makes your new tooth using a high-quality ceramic block. The time taken to complete the milling procedure can vary between 6 minutes to 30 minutes depending on the specific technology used and complexity of the tooth.

The ceramic blocks are available in a range of shades and colors. Your dentist will pick the most suitable color that matches your adjacent teeth. After the crown or veneer has been created, the dentist may characterize it and tint it to make it look similar to your adjoining teeth, earlier to either polishing it or glazing it in a furnace. Your new false tooth is then ready to be fixed onto your prepared tooth.

There are few benefits you can get by opting to go with CEREC than the traditional laboratory-made restorations. The biggest advantage is that the entire treatment is performed in a single visit, saving you multiple trips to the dentist's office. All you have to do is take one day off from work and get the treatment. When CEREC technology is used for your treatment you only need one set of local anaesthetic injections, as the full treatment can be performed within an hour. Another benefit you get from CEREC is, your dentist is in full control of the end result of the treatment as the crown or veneer is designed and made from beginning to the end by your own dentist. But in the traditional method, a crown is made in a laboratory under the control of the technician, so the dentist does not have full control over how it will look and fit. With CEREC, you can avoid the need of temporary restorations as well. When you are to get lab-made veneers, you have to wear temporary veneers until your new teeth are made. Usually these temporary restorations are known to fall off and cause difficulties; with CEREC restorations this is no longer needed.
