Choosing a Sedation Dentist

Posted: Nov 09, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

Many people experience a certain amount of anxiety over visiting the dentist's office. Some, however, find it hard to come into the dentist's office even if they are in serious need of dental care. If you are one of those who experience anxiety at the dentist then you may want to consider choosing a sedation dentist in your area. The benefits of sedation dentistry are numerous for those who would rather not be at the dentist. Many people even say that they have no recollection of their visit at all after it is over.

The choice of which dentist to go to should include factors that involve the sedation side of their practice. If you are currently looking for a sedation dentist you may want to consider what kind of questions you should ask as you go through your search.

Things to Consider in Your Search:

  • Education: Above and beyond the core course requirements to become a dentist, does the dentist have the advanced training necessary to provide you with the best care possible while sedated?
  • Patient Monitoring: Will your dentist provide you with the monitoring necessary to ensure that you don't have any adverse reactions to the type of sedative you have chosen?
  • On-Going training: Membership in organizations such as DOCS (Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation) lets you know that your dentist stays up to date on the latest breakthroughs in sedation dentistry.
  • Experience: Ask your dentist how many of his patients choose to undergo sedation and how much experience he has with different types of sedation. Make sure that your dentist has the right qualifications.

These are just a few of the things you should keep in mind while choosing a dentist for your sedation needs. You may also want to consider how the dentist's office itself makes you feel. Oftentimes it only takes the usual sights, sounds and smells of a dentist's office to make a person feel the discomfort and stress that they know is waiting for them in the dentist's chair. Many dentists make it their goal to provide a comfortable and atypical atmosphere for their patients so that they can feel at home as they wait for their appointment.
