Cosmetic Dentistry More than Aesthetic

While cosmetic dentists do indeed create beautiful smiles, they do more than create an aesthetic appearance. Cosmetic dentists often have more training than do general dentists. Cosmetic dentistry is a specialty and general dentists must continue with their education to become one. This means that cosmetic dentists have the skill and training necessary for both aesthetic appearance, as well as preventative care. It also may already be obvious to you that a beautiful smile is a healthy smile.

If your gums are healthy, your bite aligned and any cavities you have are taken care of, then the purely cosmetic side of your dental work will be successful. It is this foundation of healthy gums and teeth that a good looking smile comes from. Only after these general dental concerns are taken care of can the cosmetic dentist focus on such things as a smile makeover. Tooth whitening, crowns and veneers are part of this.

Cosmetic Dental and General Dental Procedure Similarities

There are some aspects of cosmetic dentistry that seem like a general dental crossover, such as filling cavities. Older fillings are made of mercury amalgam, which may be a cause of concern where overall health is concerned. While the controversy around mercury continues, there are many dentists who have become metal-free practices. In addition to possibly being a healthier choice, the newer fillings are a natural tooth color. As an aesthetic choice for dental fillings, it can’t get much better than this. Not only will this filling look like your natural teeth, it will strengthen the tooth.

In addition to taking care of the individual needs of each tooth, the cosmetic dentist is able to view the whole mouth. By doing so, the cosmetic dentist can see how the aesthetic appearance can work overall. If by whitening your teeth or applying onlays or inlays will help your goals, your cosmetic dentist can see what else might be done to tie all of these things together. They will be able to explain to you why this is so, as well as show you how your dental health is as important as the beauty of your smile. Oftentimes one cannot exist without the other.

If you are looking for preventative care only, a general dentist can certainly help you. If you are looking for a dentist that can help you improve your smile, look for an experienced cosmetic dentist who will also be able to improve your overall health.
