The term dental crown refers to the restoration of a tooth with indirect methods using cement into its place. It is used as a cap or a cover to the tooth. The crown is fitted over the tooth which is damaged. It looks like a natural tooth. It can hold the parts of the broken tooth and it can also be used as a bridge in the same place.
Even shapeless and bad colored teeth can be covered by crowns. It is a type of dental restoration, through which the crowns are cemented in such a way that they fully cover the teeth portion above the gum line. But many people go in for a cosmetic dentist to fix the crowns. But this does not work out if the teeth have been damaged extensively.
Crowns can be made in different types of materials like all metals, all ceramic, and porcelain combination Most of the metals used to make a crown are gold alloy, base metal alloy like nickel or chromium or palladium. Most of the metals are strongest and they are typically used for back teeth purposes. Generally it lasts for seven years and even more than that.
The procedure for this method is known as root canal treatment. This is done before the crown is placed in the decayed area. It is also not necessary to do root canal treatment for every body for whom the crown has to be placed. To place the crown in the decayed place, the dentist must first file down the tooth to make some gap for it. To make an impression of the tooth, after filing down the place the dentist will use a thread to push the gum down the tooth. This can be removed after a few minutes. This impression will be sent to the lab and based on the size the crown will be made.
Till the crown is ready, the dentist will provide a temporary crown which is made of plastic. After the original crown is prepared the temporary crown will be replaced and permanent crown will be tested and then it will be cemented. As this treatment is simple and does not require any post procedure discomfort or will not cause any sensitivity. In case of any sensitivity while consuming anything or if the crown is loose or damaged or if the crown comes out of the mouth then in all these cases the patient must consult the dentist and get it repaired.
Many people fix crown to their teeth to get some cosmetic appearance. So dental crowns are even utilized to improve the cosmetic appearance and also to resolve if any other problem in the teeth. Generally the crown must not be used to improve the appearance of the tooth, because the dentist will grind a certain area of the tooth in order to fix the dental crown.
