Digital photography tutorial for Capturing Children on Film: You may think you know it all when it comes to taking pictures, but all of that may go out the window when photographing children. Using the typical vocabulary that is called for in standard photo shoots (like "freeze" and "hold it") will only get lost on a child. Anticipation is key for you to predict a child's actions and capture them on film.
As children will not always cooperate with what you want, you need to use your imagination to get them to be at their best. Use their behavior to your advantage. If a child is being uncooperative, try telling him to do the opposite of what you want, expecting him to try to thwart your plans. There is nothing wrong with tricking a child as long as you get the shots you need.
Before even beginning a photo session with a child (or children), you have some work to do. First, you need to make sure you know your camera inside and out. You then need to know what role you play in getting the best pictures possible. The child or children you are photographing will require 100% of your undivided attention- you have to ask yourself if you're capable of delivering that. You won't have any opportunities for wasted time- a child won't stand for it. They have very little attention spans and what they do have, they will be watching you to see that you are focused on them at all times. If you try and get the pictures as fast as possible, that won't work either; the key for that all important photograph is getting the child's cooperation.
Expect the unexpected when photographing children. Know your subject, know what you might expect at any given age you are presented with. A five year old is not going to act the same as a one year old. The more you know, the more successful you will be at capturing the best images possible. Keep in mind that the best photographs means more income for you.
Photographing children will yield a fantastic array of poses: you can expect multiple expressions, behaviors and poses all in one session. You likely will never get the same when photographing other subjects; children are unique in this regard and the more you know about handling them when taking their picture, the better shots you will get. Kids come in all shapes and sizes. It is important to know the child's limitations and not push them past them. Don't expect a 6-month-old baby to have the stamina of a 2-year-old. Learn to appreciate the differences in children for taking great photographs.
While you may not appreciate having a child's parents in the studio (or location of the shoot), they can turn out to be extremely helpful in assisting you in capturing the types of photographs they are looking for. Parents will be able to tell you what to do [or not do] to get their child's attention and keep it. All of this knowledge can come in very handy given children are not very capable of sitting still for any great length of time.
Above all else, get your camera ready to go - second chances to capture an impromptu moment don't come around very often (if at all) when photographing children.
Forget about the use of a tripod in a photo session with a child- it will only get in the way especially as things start to happen quickly. Make sure your camera is on a fast shutter speed (to prevent blurring) at all times; you never know what a child is going to do next and you must be ready to capture it no matter what.
This digital photography tutorial also recommends that when photographing children, there is no need to take the standard picture (unless you are asked to do so by the parents). Be as creative as possible; photograph them on a horse, coming down the slide in a park, running after a ball. There are so many possibilities! The more experience you gain taking pictures of children the more you will know what works best for each child and each situation.
Take picture of one child is challenging enough, but sometimes, you are forced to deal with more than one. Siblings, cousins, twins, triplets are common subjects you will have to deal with. Don't panic! Admittedly, controlling more than one child can be difficult, but the key is to get all the subjects focused on one focal point before you take the picture. It can be very tricky, but with practice, you will learn it isn't impossible.
If you are not using a digital camera to capture a child on film, you may be in trouble. You need the simplicity and speed of the digital camera to be able to both look at the photos as you go and to also capture children's attention. Keep in mind their attention span comes and goes very quickly and there are no second chances in getting that "perfect" photo a second time. Sometimes it helps to use something they haven't seen to capture their attention. Don't overuse this trick because children will tire of it quickly.
Brothers and sisters can also play a vital role in your photography session with children. Siblings may actually be more successful than parents in getting their brother or sister to laugh, cry, smile, or make a funny face. Use the comfort level a child feels with their sibling to your best advantage and get the pictures you want. Another bonus to having sibling present, is that the parents may decide that they too should be photographed- all this means a bigger photo package for the client and more money for you!
Lighting and backdrops can be particularly useful when photographing children. The more experienced you become, the more comfortable you will feel in introducing these elements into the photography session with a child. Even is not using these tools, you can still take quality photographs nonetheless. You can always experiment, though a three-light set-up (consisting of a main light and back light) are ideal.
Continue to use your creativity to its capacity when it comes to photographing children: don't stay in the studio unless you are required to. Try out different venues particularly outside. If you do, you won't have to worry about lighting- nature will provide it all for you. Think about what makes a child happy: toys, stuffed animals, puppets, candy. Use these props to your advantage when photographing children. Make sure to keep these types of things on hand that can be used at any time to capture the child's attention.
