How To Stay On Top Of Oral Hygiene

Posted: Jul 27, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

With recent increased costs in dental work, and most of UK dentists working privately, there has never been a better time to start looking after your teeth properly. Add to this the money-saving trend that has swept the nation after the credit crunch and maintaining good oral hygiene makes even more sense than usual. Of course, get regular check-ups by your dentist, every six months is ideal, but this can often lead to costly dental work. They say that prevention is better than cure and, in the case of teeth, this has never been more true.

Apart from brushing your teeth at least twice a day, there are many other simple everyday habits you can get into to help protect your smile. A good place to start is flossing. It is said that almost 90% of damage to teeth occurs between the teeth due to food getting stuck there and producing a corrosive acid. Flossing each day will prevent this, but eating foods that actively encourage your mouth to produce saliva, like apples and pears, will also help rinse the mouth of stray food particles. On the subject of fruit, strawberries apparently contain a natural tooth-whitening enzyme which can slowly brighten your smile.

It's not just avoiding decay that you should consider, also look for ways to strengthen your teeth too. Our teeth get their toughness from calcium that we take in through food, and for teeth, the more calcium the better. Add some more calcium to your diet to help strengthen teeth and improve gum hygiene, with foods like milk, cheese and nuts.

Luckily, even if you live a fast-paced lifestyle and perhaps can't always look after you teeth as much as you would like to, there are still plenty of ways to help improve hygiene throughout the day. Drinking plenty of water is not just good for your body and brain, but also your teeth as it keeps the mouth fresh and dislodges food build up. Likewise sugar-free chewing gum after snacks is great as it encourages saliva which prevents decay.

Finally, make sure you are getting into the right sort of brushing habits each day. Use a small headed or electric toothbrush and thoroughly scrub your teeth for at least three minutes, especially where the teeth and gums meet. Finish by brushing your tongue to discourage bacteria accumulating there, floss, and then rinse with a good quality mouthwash.

Sticking to a solid oral hygiene plan like this will help minimise any trips to the dentist but, when you do need to go, make sure you have comprehensive dental insurance cover, to at least take the sting out of the cost.

Health care is very costly and not everyone is able to afford it directly. In some countries, healthcare is subsidized by the government. However, in the United States this is not the case and citizens have to directly bear the costs or subscribe to insurance policies which will cover them. Dental health care is no exception-many dental procedures are very costly and can be sought only by subscribing to private dental insurance.
