You look in the mirror and take a double take! Your teeth are the color of your favorite coffee and need whitening. Smile, this is not really bad news. The answer could be as near as your bathroom, or at least no further than your dentist office.
How in the world did this happen to your teeth?
Assuming you have been enjoying your coffee for a while, and maybe a little red wine too, the mystery is solved. Your teeth are composed of two layers. The inner layer is called the dentin, and the outer layer is the enamel.
The enamel is hard and allows you to have use of your teeth for many years, unless something like decay or accidental breakage happens. But, one thing the enamel cannot stop is absorption of substances. It is porous.
So, something like coffee gets into the enamel and creates a stain. This is not a dangerous problem to have, but it is annoying if your teeth get too darkened. You may feel like you don’t want to smile as much and become self-conscious about it.
The answer is a teeth whitening kit or a trip to the dentist for essentially the same thing. These kits normally involve having a tray molded to fit your teeth. The dentist can do this; or, some kits have a way for you to heat the material, forming the tray and then letting it cool after you make an impression.
After you have the tray ready, a thin layer of paste is applied. What is the paste? It is normally carbamide peroxide in a 10% - 20% concentration. Also some kits use a concentration of hydrogen peroxide. Both of these are bleaching agents.
Once they come in contact with your teeth in the tray, the teeth also absorb them. The resulting reaction is called an oxidation reaction, and it simply means the stains are being broken down.
The process can take about two hours if done during the day. Or, you can wear the tray at night for a longer process. Some people have sensitivity and will have to find some alternatives through the assistance and care of a dentist. But for a large number of people this is the easy answer!
