The world of dentistry has not been left behind by the modern developments in science and technology that have effectively transformed the manner in which medical and health care services are provided in the word today. This fact is clearly evident in the large number of dental treatment and dental hygiene options that are slowly but surely emerging as part of the requirements or the necessities for good health. All of these new and innovative solutions to the common dental problems such as tooth decay or ‘gummy' smiles are part of a relatively new field of dentistry that is commonly referred to as cosmetic dentistry. Most of the procedures that are involved in cosmetic surgery are designed with the ultimate goal of improving the appearance of the patients, hence the term cosmetic.

Among the new treatments that are currently available for patients is cosmetic gum surgery. The term cosmetic gum surgery refers to the series of interventions and procedures that are performed on the gums in order to improve their appearance and move you closer to that perfect smile. It is the gum tissue that is responsible for the determination of both the shape and for of the top of your mouth since it acts as the support frame for the mouth. Anytime that the gums do not look right or they become too weak, the end result is usually a less than attractive smile. A good example of such an outcome is what is commonly referred to as the ‘gummy smile'. This occurs when a person seems to reveal too much of his or her gums upon smiling. The reason for such a gummy smile may either be because the individual in question has very short teeth giving the appearance of a lot of gum, or else because they have too much gum. In the event that the patients have got too much gum, the teeth normally tend to appear much shorter. Cosmetic gum surgery has over the past few years proved to be very effective in the correction of the ‘gummy smiles'. What happens when cosmetic surgery is conducted in such cases is that the dentist performing the procedure lengthens your teeth starting from the neck upwards, and this ensures that less gum is exposed anytime you smile.

In addition to correcting the ‘gummy smiles', cosmetic gum surgery is also applied in the correction of the reverse effects. It is a fact that as you grow older, your gums may shrink or recede, becoming smaller and making your teeth appear much longer whenever you smile. This too can be rectified by the use of cosmetic gum surgery. The cosmetic dentist should be able to correct this problem by stretching the gums accordingly so that your teeth lose the long appearance.
