Lumineers

Thanks to the free market system, technological advancements in cosmetic dentistry frequently lead to better products at lower costs. Since most cosmetic procedures are not covered by insurance plans, the competition is fierce, driving innovation and bringing more choices to the consumer. This is the case for porcelain veneers as well as other cosmetic dentistry procedures. The latest development in porcelain veneers is a thin, easy to apply product called Lumineers.

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are ultra thin, approximately .2 mm thick and very translucent, which is what gives veneers their vibrant tooth-like qualities. Because Lumineers are so thin, no enamel reduction is necessary prior to application. Because no enamel is removed, the procedure is completely reversible if necessary. During the initial application, any necessary modification, or removal of the Lumineer, there are no shots and no painful drilling involved, making Lumineers a virtually pain free option.

Still made out of porcelain, these veneers are very similar to traditional porcelain veneers, just thinner. The primary difference during application of the Lumineer veneer is the amount of preparation of the tooth that is necessary. Instead of removing several millimeters of dental material in order to make a base for the veneer, the enamel is slightly etched to create a rough surface for the adhesive and the Lumineer applied. Once in place, the Lumineer gives the tooth a bright new appearance. Lumineer veneers are guaranteed for at least twenty years.

Advantages

The main advantage of Lumineer veneers over traditional porcelain veneers is that the tooth material remains intact. Should you need to remove it in the future, it is a simple process of applying a solution to dissolve the adhesive and remove the appliance. Corrections or changes, or other dental work can then be undertaken with minimal difficulty to the patient.

Procedure

The procedure takes is performed in two visits.

  • During the first visit, the cosmetic dentist carefully measures your teeth and takes accurate impressions of your mouth.
  • With the aid of computers, a detailed plan is created for your set of Lumineer porcelain veneers. All of this careful planning directly reduces the amount of time spent in the office with fittings and adjustments.
  • The color is carefully matched to any existing teeth that will still be visible and the order for the appliances sent to the LVI certified lab.

During the second visit, the teeth are carefully prepared and given a rough surface so that the adhesive has adequate surface area to grab onto. The veneer is placed and allowed to set, and then you are all set with your new, brighter, whiter smile. There is virtually no pain associated with Lumineers after application. Once complete, you simply resume your normal regimen of brushing, flossing, and scheduling regular dental office visits.

Alternative Options

Lumineers are not indicated for all patients. In some cases, the gaps that are to be filled or the current alignment of your teeth may require the traditional porcelain veneers or other cosmetic dentistry. Only a trained cosmetic dentist who is proficient with evaluating and applying Lumineer appliances is able to determine if Lumineers are the right option to correct your smile.

Now, getting a brighter, whiter, movie star smile is as simple as a couple of visits to a qualified cosmetic dentist. To find out more about Lumineers in the Salem area, visit the website of Dr. Paul Mathew, D.D.S.

If your gums are healthy, your bite aligned and any cavities you have are taken care of, then the purely cosmetic side of your dental work will be successful. It is this foundation of healthy gums and teeth that a good looking smile comes from. Only after these general dental concerns are taken care of can the cosmetic dentist focus on such things as a smile makeover.
