A toothache may feel like a sharp pain or a dull ache. The tooth may be sensitive to pressure, heat, cold, or sweets. In cases of severe pain, identifying the problem tooth is often difficult. Any patient with a toothache should see a dentist at once for diagnosis and treatment. Most toothaches get worse if not treated.
Toothache occurs because the pulp of the tooth is exposed, disturbed or infected. The pulp is the inner layer of the tooth which is engulfed in a layer of dentin and then by the hard layer that we see called the enamel, which is packed full of minerals. Toothache can also occur if just the outer enamel layer is damaged exposing only the dentin.
An antibiotic will usually be prescribed if a fever or swelling of the jaw is present. Such procedures are generally done in stages, with pain and infection being cared for immediately, and reconstructive procedures being performed at a later time (weeks to months). You will be able to return to work or school while you recover. Dentists and oral surgeons may plan additional procedures at the most appropriate time.
Onion may give bad odor temporarily, but in the long run it is very beneficial to dental hygiene. Onion can fight against the germs that accumulate on the teeth and hence prevent future problems with the teeth. People chomping on one raw onion a day are protected from toothache, apart from various other health benefits.
Foods that have bitter, pungent and astringent tastes are good for keeping toothaches in check. These foods can kill the microorganisms settled in the cavities.
If the pulp of the tooth is infected (pulpitis), you may need to have root canal treatment. Your dentist (or a specialist called an endodontist) takes out the decayed pulp, fills the space with a paste, and covers the tooth with a crown to protect and seal it.
To reduce sensitivity to heat, cold, or brushing, consider using toothpaste specifically designed for sensitive teeth. Brush with it regularly or rub a small amount of the paste on the sensitive area with your finger a 2 to 3 times a day. Floss gently between your teeth.
When you have toothache, the least you can do is to wash your mouth thoroughly so as to remove any food particles present in your tooth enamel. First, wash your mouth with lukewarm water then brush thoroughly using a toothbrush or floss. Make sure you brush the parts that surround your injured tooth.
Ice is one of the easiest ways to get rid of toothache. Do not apply ice directly on your skin. Take a cloth and put some ice cubes in it. Then apply the cloth on the part of your cheek from where toothache is coming. This should give you temporary relief if nothing else.
Garlic is the essential ingredient in one home remedy for toothache for temporary relief. One clove of garlic, combined with a pinch of rock salt, is to be applied to the afflicted tooth. As a result, pain is eventually relieved. As a "tip" towards a home remedy for toothache preventative, a single clove of garlic should be chewed each day, preferable in the morning, as it can aid in strengthening teeth, and maintaining overall dental health.
