Polishing: When I had my previous appointment, the dentist polished my teeth, why was this performed?

The final stage of teeth cleaning, as well as scaling and certain restorative processes, is polishing. Stains are removed and the restoration surface or the tooth is smoothed and polished by it.

Can you describe the method of polishing teeth?

At the end of a deep root cleaning procedure or routine cleaning, you might have your teeth polished by the dentist or dental hygienist. The dentist might elect to polish any new restoration put into your mouth, such as a crown or filling. Dentist typically use a prophy jet polisher or a rubber cup polisher. A rubber cup containing a bit of polishing formula is placed next to the tooth's top layer on a rotating device. Imagine this as a softer power sand and buff for your teeth. The prophy jet device resembles a pressure washer, using a stream of water and baking soda that smoothes and polishes your teeth. Each process works well to get rid of certain stains and imparts a polished and smooth look to your teeth.

Is teeth polishing right for me?

Although it is not unusual to polish teeth, and it can be useful, it is not strictly the rule in a conventional cleaning. Have a talk with your dentist about the whens and whys of his recommendation to polish teeth.

Polishing is part of the prophylaxis procedure to complete your dental treatment where the dentist place a paste into the small brush rubber cup to remove stain and any other material from the teeth crown. Some New Jersey dental clinics use abrasive materials and power hand pieces for polishing. However, coronal polishing objective is removing plaque as well as extrinsic stains evident on your natural teeth only. This does not entirely replace total prophylaxis procedure or remove calculus.

There are two types of dental stains classified specifically by location namely extrinsic or intrinsic. Polishing is one good way to eliminate extrinsic stains that normally occur at the outer surfaces of the teeth. One of the most notable characteristics of extrinsic stain is its color as such as yellow stain, green stain, black line stain, tobacco stain, orange and red stains, and other extrinsic stains like fluoride light brown to yellow stain. A New Jersey dental clinic can polish these stains for you after every dental treatment.
