To find out more about porcelain crowns, please visit www.RochesterAdvancedDentistry.com. Both Dr. Doolin and Dr. Haddad received their training with the prestigious LVI Institute, and their distinguished dental techniques now put them in the top 1% of dental professionals nationwide.
In the past, available dental technology created crowns fused to metal for a strong, break-resistant, single tooth restoration. With today’s amazing advancements, however, crowns are often created from pure porcelain, especially when the crown will be used for those all-important front teeth where a natural result is highly desirable.
There are many reasons why your dentist may suggest a porcelain crown:
• Badly broken teeth
• Existing large fillings
• Large area of tooth decay
• Weak fillings
How Are Crowns Applied?
Porcelain crowns are thin moldings designed to cover the tooth’s entire surface. Crowns can generally be applied in two visits. The goal is to avoid removing the tooth, which contributes to weakening of the jawbone.
During your first visit:
• Your tooth is prepared by removing any decay
• The damaged tooth is reshaped in preparation for the crown
• A mold is made and sent to the dental laboratory
• The crown is hand-made at the lab
• The crown is custom-fitted to your mouth
You will be given a temporary dental crown to wear to protect your remaining tooth while your permanent crown is being made.
On your second visit:
• The custom fitted crown is bonded to your tooth with adhesive material
• The crown is then fitted and bonded with special dental adhesive
A crown is a permanent restoration. Your crown is meant to last for years and should never need removal or replacement unless your natural tooth develops an infection.
Unlike many bonding materials, you do not need to be concerned that your porcelain crown will change color over time.
Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns are a good option for back teeth. Because they are more durable than all porcelain crowns, porcelain fused to metal crowns are often used for back teeth where biting forces are stronger.
However, several limitations apply:
• Because the translucency of porcelain fused to metal crowns is poor when compared to all porcelain crowns, an ‘opaquer’, a specially formulated resin available in tooth shades that masks out metal and discolored tooth structure, is used to cover the metal.
• A porcelain-fused-to-metal crown eventually shows a dark line along the gum as the gum recedes, which may be undesirable for some patients.
A very natural looking and aesthetically pleasing result with porcelain crowns can be created that is virtually undetectable to others. Keep in mind that you should always choose a dentist with special training in cosmetic restorations.

Snap-On Smiles of Today

Lumineers to the Rescue

Before this revolutionary product was developed and perfected, the average porcelain veneer was, on average, the thickness of a fingernail. With the old veneer process, and with many of the other popular products available today, shaving of the tooth enamel is routine.

General anesthesia needs to be provided by a licensed anesthesiologist and under the care of a physician, and this is usually the case with oral surgery done through clinics and hospitals.
