The Cost of Dental Care

Posted: Aug 06, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

People who do not get the dental care they need can suffer from lost teeth.  Aside from being aesthetically displeasing, missing teeth can cause many problems.  Missing teeth can make it difficult for people to chew their food, thus making it difficult to eat the right foods to get proper nutrition.  In the American culture, missing teeth are also sometimes seen as a social deficit, because poor teeth are perceived as a sign of laziness or a lack of education.  This is not always the case.  Just because a person loses their teeth does not mean they do not care about their looks or they are uneducated.

Many times it simply means they are not able to afford the dental care they need.  Bad teeth happen to good people every day.  Genetics, immune system function and even locality can all have something to do with what sort of teeth you have.  People living in the Southern United States, for instance, did not have fluoridated water until quite recently.  Fluoride has become essential to preventing tooth decay and without it; many people are unable to maintain their pearly whites.  Some people do not have the immune system function to fight off the bacteria and viruses that cause cavities and gum disease, thus resulting in tooth loss for these types of people.  Dental care is quite costly, and many people are unable to afford it.  For some, every time they go to the dentist, it is several hundred dollars worth of dental bills to simply maintain their teeth.  If this happens enough to one person, they decide to skip dental visits because they are unable to pay for them.  Since it is hard to find actual free dental care, many people forgo going to the dentist all together and hope that lots of brushing and flossing will be enough to keep their smile.  Many times, it just is not, and these people wind up losing teeth.  Educating the public on where they can get low cost and free dental care, will help decrease this epidemic and help the lower and middle class people save their smiles?

There are some things you may want to skimp on to save a few pennies: shoes you'll only wear once or twice, generic cereal that tastes just like the real stuff or sticky notes for your office that don't cost an arm and a leg.
