TMJ headaches

Headaches are among some of the most commonly experienced medical symptoms causing pain and tension across the scalp, face and jaw and in varying levels, leaving their victims unable to function properly and in comfort.

Whether you suffer from occasional headache symptoms that have you reaching for the painkillers or find yourself at the mercy on frequent and consistent pain, there could be an answer to the cause and treatment of you discomfort.

Tempromadibular Joint (TMJ) syndrome can be commonly associated with the occurrence of frequent headaches or migraines as well as neck, shoulder and back pain. Some sufferers can experience more intense symptoms of TMJ including partial deafness, vertigo, sinus problems and clicking of the jaw.

TMJ dysfunction is commonly attributed to irregularities in an individual’s bite (Malocclusion) and as such, effective TMJ treatment can be found through your dental practitioner who has the knowledge and expertise to guide you through your headache cure.

Establishing the reasons for a malocclusion can be an important stage in rectifying the problem and reasons can often be found in looking at previous injury’s, dental work, gradual tooth wear, loss of teeth as well as your overall posture.

Once the reason for your discomfort is established, your TMJ headache treatment can be dealt with through a series of dental treatments which aim to readjust your jaw to its ideal position through the advanced methods of muscle relaxation and the implementing of an oral splint. Known as an ‘orthotic’ the TMJ splint acts to position your jaw correctly for a varying period, depending on the individuals need.

Once the initial phase of establishment and orthotic treatment has been undergone, your dentist can provide you with the continued support and treatment to assist you in your treatments and if further action is needed, recontouring, reconstruction and orthodontic procedures can be taken on to help remedy any ongoing physical contributions to your pain.
