What is Cosmetic Dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry is a specialized branch of dentistry that focuses on the appearance of the teeth rather than their overall health. While most everyone will see a general dentist many times over the course of a lifetime, many will never see a cosmetic dentist unless they have specific problems with the way their teeth look or must have a tooth or teeth repaired or replaced due to accident or injury.

What Cosmetic Dentists Treat

A variety of problems with the appearance of your teeth can be addressed through <a onClick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outgoing/article_exit_link');" href=http://www.drwendling.com/cosmetic-dentistry.html>cosmetic dentistry</a>. Some of the most common issues dealt with include:

  • Slight misalignment
  • Discolored enamel
  • Pitted or cracked enamel
  • Chipped teeth
  • Small gaps between the teeth

In general, these conditions don’t interfere with the function of the mouth, but can make you feel self-conscious or uncomfortable about the look of your smile. By correcting these issues, a cosmetic dentist can give you the look you’ve always wanted, giving you new self-confidence and a bright, dazzling smile.

Common Tools of Cosmetic Dentistry

Cosmetic dentists have a variety of procedures and tools available for their work. Some of the most commonly used are:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Dental implants
  • Porcelain veneers
  • Dental bonding

Among the most popular cosmetic dentistry procedures are porcelain veneers and teeth whitening. If your teeth have been stained due to smoking, food or beverage staining, or as a result of natural aging, teeth whitening can make a dramatic difference to the look of your smile.

For extreme staining, or staining that affects deeper layers of the teeth, porcelain veneers can provide a bright, white smile where teeth whitening has not been effective. Veneers can also address a wide range of issues such as cracked or chipped teeth, slight misalignments, or even gaps between teeth. Dental bonding can also address similar issues, while implants are used to replace a missing tooth or several missing teeth.

Your cornea bends light as it enters your eye. A properly shaped cornea focuses that light on the retina. If you are nearsighted your cornea is either too curved or your eye is too long, causing the light to focus in front of the retina. When the light reaches your retina it has started to spread out again and the image is blurry.
