What Root Canal Treatment Means For You

Posted: Dec 27, 2009 |Comments: 0 |

The root canal procedure deals with the nerves of the teeth, which can be quite painful when infections or injuries occur. The nerves of your teeth are protected by a pulp at the center of them, a small amount of the blood vessels and nerve endings existing slightly above the gum line, within the crown, and the remainder of them traveling down the root of the tooth through the canal. When injury or a structural breakdown of any type occurs with the outer workings of the teeth, namely the enamel and the dentin, the nerve endings in the pulp of the tooth will send signals to alert the brain of impending trauma.

When the dentist suggests a root canal, it is normally because an attempt to save the tooth from further damage is the best alternative to losing the tooth altogether. This procedure can be quite painful if the nerves within the tooth are not completely frozen and numb before they are removed from the root canal. By removing the nerves from the tooth, the dentist is able to completely clean all debris and decay from the important inner areas, pack the tooth, and possible insert a post, and mend and seal the tooth with filling material. Once this procedure is finished, the patient is afforded a pain free solution to what might have been a major problem.

The root canal treatment is one of the most common dental procedures performed today, and has saved many patients from the loss of otherwise devastated teeth. There are many insurance companies that will not cover such a surgery, as it is far cheaper to remove the tooth altogether than it is to perform a root canal treatment. The benefits of keeping ones own natural teeth under any circumstances has recently come under some debate, as the alternative cosmetic procedures available are often less expensive in the long run.

If you are looking into the possibility of a root canal treatment on a troublesome tooth, your dentist will be able to x-ray your traumatized areas and give you the full picture regarding what is going on, what your options are regarding treatment, and what your estimated out of pocket costs will be. The root canal treatment is one which requires a local anesthetic at the very least, while most patients will require gas as well. Many find that full anesthesia works best under this procedure.

There are quite a few advantages to this treatment as opposed to veneers, braces, or other transparent alignment devices, the first of which is the patients ability to eat, drink, and cleanse the teeth without having to remove the braces.

Your smile is one of the very first things that most people will notice about you, so it's important that you feel comfortable with your smile. If you have teeth that aren't straight or that are stained, you might be embarrassed to show your teeth in public. When you smile with your mouth closed out of habit, you might give people the incorrect impression that you're shy, angry, or stand-offish.
