Gluten Free Licorice: How to Find it - 3 Tips

Posted: May 08, 2011 |

Licorice root is gluten free. There are licorice candies on the market made with licorice root extract, or flavored like licorice with anise, that do not contain any gluten ingredients.

But if you're following a gluten free diet, you must be careful. There are also many licorice candies that are definitely not gluten free!

How to Find Gluten Free Licorice - 3 Tips

1. Read ingredient labels carefully

Usually if wheat, or other gluten containing ingredients, are present in licorice candy, they will be listed on the package. Wheat has been used as a base for many licorice candies in both North America and Europe for a long time. For example, one of the most popular licorice candy types in the UK and Canada is licorice allsorts, which as of this writing does not have a gluten free equivalent.

If in doubt, contact the manufacturer via the phone number or website listed on the package.

2. Make sure that the product isn't produced in a factory alongside foods that contain gluten ingredients

Even if licorice candy isn't made with gluten ingredients, it may have been processed in a facility that also processes gluten containing foods. Cross contamination with gluten could be a problem.

The amount of gluten that might end up in the licorice candy processed under such conditions could be so low that only the most sensitive person will react to it. But it's wise to be cautious. Unless the manufacturer tests every batch of candy to check for gluten contamination, verifying it's too low to be an issue, you're taking a risk.

To be safe, find licorice candy that is processed in a dedicated gluten free facility. This will sometimes be stated on the package, but not always. If in doubt, contact the manufacturer via the phone number or website listed on the package.

3. Search online for gluten free licorice

If you can't find good gluten free licorice candy in local stores, do a search online for 'gluten free licorice.'

As the awareness of gluten intolerance and Celiac disease grows, manufacturers are responding by either making it clear that their products are gluten free, or by creating gluten free alternatives for the most popular licorice candies currently on the market.

With these 3 tips in mind, you can find excellent gluten free licorice for yourself and other licorice fans.
