Holiday Dessert Recipes - The Best Ways To Cut Calories From Holiday Desserts

The first rule is to eat whatever you like the most. Does that sound strange? The truth is, if you starve yourself, you will probably eventually break down and eat even more than usual. So if you like Christmas pudding, by all means have some. But only have half of what you would normally have. Follow this rule with everything else on your plate. Eat what you like, but halve the portions.

Secondly, if you overeat, make a point of eating less the next day. East a light breakfast, and have salads for lunch. An individual meal need not be all-important. If you look at your overall food intake over a period of two or three days, it is much easier to keep within limits.

Thirdly, eat more slowly. You will be surprised what a big difference that eventually makes to the amount of food you eat in one sitting. Eat a little, then chat a bit with the people sitting next to you at the table.

If you are the hostess for many of these holiday parties, here are some ideas for desserts that won't leave your guests feeling guilty about enjoying themselves.

Use unsweetened apple sauce in the place of oil. Simply replace half the oil with unsweetened apple sauce.

Replace margarine or butter in your recipes with fruit puree.

Replace regular cream cheese with fat free cream cheese in cookies and puddings, or at least partially replace the cream cheese with the fat free variety.

Use canned pumpkin for desserts that are based on pumpkin.

Replace sweetened condensed milk in desserts with a fat-free mix. Use very cold skim milk to mix the ingredients, and you will still have an extremely tasty dessert with half the calories.

Use fresh fruit instead of canned fruit in recipes.

Replace pound cake with 'angel food cake' and use low-fat whipped cream in recipes requiring this.

If a recipe calls for the use of buttermilk, that is certainly a delicious option. But if you replace the buttermilk with a mix of skim milk and lemon juice, you will get a very similar taste while dropping a lot of calories.

Instead of using whole eggs, consider using egg whites in your recipes. Whole eggs are extremely fattening. Egg whites much less so. Keep the ratio of whole eggs to egg whites at about one to four, and nobody will notice any difference in the taste, but they will only be eating half the fat they otherwise would have.

These simple replacement techniques for your holiday dessert recipes will make a huge difference to the calorie intake of you and your guests, and all of you will have less reason to feel guilty afterwards.
