In addition to being the largest City in the Netherlands, Amsterdam is also the nations Capital. It is the 5th busiest tourist destination in Europe, fuelled by attractions such as its historic canals, the Rijksmuseum, the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Franks House, the red-light district and its many cannabis coffee shops. It also enjoys a temperate climate influenced by its proximity to the North Sea with prevailing north-westerly winds, all helping to draw over 4 million tourists annually.
Amsterdam is one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in the world. It is estimated there are over 0.5 million bicycles in the city, and this is the quickest and cheapest way to get around. If you are not a fan of cycling then you can get to most places on foot, or use the trams and water ferries for longer journeys. Unlike in the UK, cars are heavily discouraged from the city centre, yet public transport is very cheap and reliable. In fact it accounts for over 35% of all journeys made within the city.
Amsterdam is also famous for its vibrant and diverse nightlife, and as a multicultural city there are a lot of different ethnic restaurants to be found. In summary, it has all the advantages of a big city, but relatively few of the disadvantages!
Like in all big cities the around the world, there are cheats looking for an easy target. A typical trick in less reputable establishments is, if you pay with a note, to give you change as if you tendered a note of one denomination smaller (for instance to give you change for 50 euros if you give them a 100 euro note) and then pretend it was a mistake should you have noticed. You can help avoid this happening by announcing the value of the note as you hand it over ("100 euros"). This is good practise anywhere in the world though, and Amsterdam doesn’t have an abnormally high level of crime compared with other tourist hotspots.
Flights to Amsterdam are regular, and cheap flights to Amsterdam are easily found. Hotels in Amsterdam cater for all budgets.
