A Place of Intellect

Harvard Square in Boston is known all over the world for one characteristic, its huge collection of bookstores. Just because you are not a member of the Harvard Alumni doesn’t mean that the troves of intellect are not availed to you. The area has a total of twenty five bookstores within walking distance from the campus. It is a great place to visit if you feel as if you can cope with the young exuberance of the place. The area is usually frequented by students and university lecturers and almost makes you feel like a part of the historic university without having to attend boring lectures or having to study for grueling exams.

At the center of Harvard square is a former subway station that has since been converted into a world famous news (a short clip of it is shown on CNN in between news telecasts) stand that is crammed with newspapers and magazines from all around the world. The sunken area next to the news stand is known as the pit and is usually frequented by youth from surrounding areas with an affinity for skateboarding or an interest in punk, hardcore or Goth culture. It is interesting to note the stark contrast between these kids and their more soberly dressed adult counterparts involved with the university.

A number of out door cafes are located in this area as well as tables for chess players. A collection of public squares are found around the area and feature a bevy of street performers all year around. The John F. Kennedy memorial stands a few steps away towards the banks of the Charles River.

The square is also frequented by a few die hard members of the US Communist party and other non-mainstream political parties who use it as place to hold meetings. Nearby a small shopping mall known as “The Garage” which was formerly a packing garage, the original vehicle ramp still survives as the centerpiece of the mall. Hotels in Boston can be found dotted around the area especially if you are looking for budget or home stay accommodation. Larger Boston hotels are located some distance away, however smaller hotels near Harvard Square are also a viable option.
