Nairobi is Masai for "a place of cool waters". Nairobi attained its city status in 1954 and is also one of the eight Kenyan provinces. A melting pot of different cultures, it is also known as the city in the sun and is the principal economic, administrative, and cultural center.  The Central Business district is home to Nairobi's main land mark - the Kenyatta International Conference Center - a spherical building that is next to the Nairobi law courts and has a statue of the first Kenyan president - Mzee Jomo Kenyatta clutching his status symbol - a flying whisk .  Many of the government offices are housed nearby along Harambee Road, also known as Government Road.  The Kenyan parliament is just a short walk away, and where the remains of the first president lie. The business district also houses hotels,a selection of restaurants,markets - the city market is open daily while the Masai market is open on Saturdays and Sundays at the Nairobi law courts car park. Downtown Nairobi holds the majority of the bus terminals - the Kenya Bus Station, The Railway Bus Station, the Country Bus Station, the Tea Room Bus Satation, Nyamakima and the Muthurwa Bus Station.

The industrial sector is confined to the outskirts of the city in an area reffered to as "industrial area". Car assemblies, food factories, detergent factories, utensils and crockery factories can be found here. Residential estates vary from the palatial - Muthaiga, Lavington, Runda, Karen,Kahawa Sukari, Thome, Garden Estate, Nyari, Loresho, Gigiri, Kitusuru, to the middle clas - South C, South B, Lang'ata, Rongai, Ngong', Umoja, Buru Buru, Don Holm,Koma Rocks, and the low class and slums: Githurai, Mathare North, Kayole, Eastleigh, Kawangware,Kibera, Mathare, to mention just a few.

What to do in Nairobi: A thrilling nightlife thrives here, trendy restaurants, fast food joints, numerous clubs, discotheques cinemas, theater and casinos are just some of the attractions. Nairobi's nightlife caters to many different crowds and notable restaurants include the Trattoria, The Carniviore Restaurant, the Meditarreano, Allan Bobbi's Bistro, Karen Blixen Coffee Garden, Talisman, Osteria del Chianti, Misono,The River Garden Centre Cafe, The Thorn Tree, Tamarind, Le Rustique Restaurant, Tamambo,Pampa Churascaria at Panari Hotel, The Moon Flower Restaurant at Palacina,The Rangers Reastaurant at The Nairobi National park, Nyama Choma Ranch at Safari Park while Kosewe's (Ronalo's) and Toona Tree offer some local flavors.

Clubs and pubs include Simba Saloon,Club Galileo,The Jockey Pub at the Hilton, The Safari Bar at Intercontinental hotel, CluBarn, Florida 2000, Klub House, Moon flower Bar at Palacina, New Florida,Gypsies, Mercury at ABC Place, Liquid Nightclub at Panari Hotel,Black Diamond, The Loft, Rozario's, Havanna, The Zone, Blue Times, Cantina club, Black Cotton, Choices,Cats Club at Safari Park Hotel, Club Dolce, Jungle Club, Simba Saloon at The Carnivore, Club Betty's, Taco's, Club sound, Ibiza, Tropez, Riviera, all catering t diffrent age groups and tastes. One can catch a cultural show put on by Safari Cats at the Safari Park Hotel at night or at The Bomas of Kenya during the day. Other alternatives are bowling at the  Village Market's Super Bowl, Play pool at numerous clubs and pubs in Nairobi, or the Tin Man in Village market, or even ice skate at Panari Hotel's Solar Ice Rink- the only facility of its kind in Nairobi.

One can also catch a play put on at the Phoenix Theater, the Kenya National Theater,The Sarakasi Dome, the Dream Theaters coming soon to Panari Hotel, or the occasional shows put on at the Braeburn Academy, The Goethe Institute and Alliance Francais - all subject to availability. Movies can be watched at the 20th Century along Mama Ngina Street, the Kenya Cinema, The Nairobi Cinema, Numetro Cinema at the Village Market, The Belle Vue drive in Cinema, Fox Cineplex at Sarit Centre, Fox capital centre on Mombasa Road,Silver Bird at Village Market,Silver Bird at Prestige Plaza, Silver Bird at The Junction, and Silver bird at Westgate shopping Mall as well as Casino Cinema

During the day, there is also plenty to do : Nairobi city  tour, visit the Karen Blixen Museum, Visit the National Museum and admire the impressive Hominid collection and the Leakey prehistoric artefacts.  Visit the Nairobi National Park, just 10 kilometers from the CBD and is home to the big five - with the exception of the elephant and the Nairobi Safari Walk. Adjoining the national park is the Daphne / David Sheldrick's Wildlife Trust where one has a chance to feed baby rhinos and elephants and even adopt one!.  The Giraffe Centre is not too far from here -  a place where one can interact with the endangered Rothschild Giraffes as they feed right off the palm of your hand.  Other places of cultural and art interest include The Kazuri Beads, Kitengela Glass, The African Heritage shops at Libra House, Capital Center and The Museum, Rahimtulla Museum of Modern Art (RAMOMA), Paa ya Paa Gallery, Marula studios in Karen, Pimbi Gallery in Lavington,The Go Down Arts Centre, Banana Hill Art studio to name just a few. Those with more time on their hand can drive to the nearby town of Kitengela, half an hours drive from the city and see The Allan Donovan House (African Heritage's co founder), which houses "the lost art collection"
