Adventuring Experiences In Dartmouth - Devon

Posted: Mar 15, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Visiting the town of Dartmouth - Devon County, is a trip back in history. Its Dart River location, in 1127-1190, was the sail point for the crusades. It was also famous for its pirates, which were authorized by the king to conduct their raids. The Royal Navy is prominent in the town with the Royal Navy training college where all of their officers are trained.

The town can be reached by personal boat, three ferries or by a bridge that is eleven miles away. There are three ferries called the Higher Ferry, the Lower Ferry and the Passenger Ferry. The Passenger Ferry carries only people and is used mainly as a connecting point with the steam railway at Kingswear station. The other two ferries carry automobiles. These automobiles can be left in the park and ride area where transportation is provided into town and allows for exploration without heavy traffic.

The historic buildings that have been preserved throughout the town are fascinating to visit. Butterwalk, a building which was built in the early sixteen hundreds, is of special interest as is Dartmouth Castle. Walking through the town and investigating these well-preserved buildings is like returning to ancient times. The architecture is awesome and one wonders how they could have built such beautiful buildings with the tools available at that time.

Food presented by the various restaurants is a gourmet's delight. This excellent food is served in surroundings that will not be found elsewhere. The railway station restaurant is particularly interesting. Built at a time when a railway was planned but never developed, the construction is unlike any one is apt to see elsewhere.

Those interested in sailing or boating will find the deep port an excellent place to dock their boats. Coming into this delightful harbor one will find many businesses available to care for the sailor's needs. Docking and then exploring the town is an excellent addition to the adventures of one's journey.

For the visitor who would like to stay for a while and enjoy the area and its events there are very good accommodations. There are hotels, bed and breakfast and guesthouses as well as places for those who wish to camp out.

There are three excellent beaches as well as adventure parks and other places to explore. Events such as the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta are always enjoyable. With its mild weather, Dartmouth is a must on anyone's itinerary.
