Alicante - Costa Blanca

The Costa Blanca (White Coast) on Spain's Mediterranean shore offers just about everything a traveler could desire, and the Port City of Alicante is a prime example. Broad beaches plus a truly cosmopolitan mix of cultures and activities make Alicante one of the most attractive spots on the coast.

The history of the area is fascinating, and there are many reminders of civilizations dating back to the Romans and Visigoths - and in 713 AD, the Moors, who named the city Alicante, or "City of Light". In the 13th century King Jaime I claimed the city and it became part of the Kingdom of Valencia and eventually part of Spain, as we know it today.

If you are interested in history, Alicante boasts several great museums, including the Archaeological Museum, which offers artifacts from 100,000 years ago and won the 2004 European Museum of the Year award. Another notable attraction is the Castle of Santa Barbara on its mountainous perch above the city.

Since World War I, Alicante has become one of the fastest growing cities in Spain, due in large part to increasing tourism. In addition to its great natural beauty, the climate is ideal. Average temperatures range from lows in the 40's to highs in the 80's, and only 37 days of the year (on average) are rainy.

The harbor at Alicante is a port for many cruise ships, and there is regular ferry service to the Balearic Islands and Algeria, as well as the Alicante Tram connecting passengers to other points on the Costa Blanca.

If you are looking for nightlife, this town offers a wide and delightful variety. At about 4:00 p.m. many of the cafes where you can relax during the daytime are transformed into lively discos that do not close until dawn.
