Amritsar is the administrative headquarter of the Amritsar District in Punjab India. It is located in the northwest part of India 32 miles east of Lahore, Pakistan. Amritsar is connected by Indian Airlines flights with Delhi, Jammu and Srinagar. The airport is situated about 11 km from the city centre.

The foreign tourists require a permit, if they intend to stay in Punjab for longer period or are travelling through Amritsar to the border and want an overnight stay. Hindi, Punjabi and English are the main languages which are spoken here.

The best season to visit Amritsar is from October to March. January and February are extremely cold months. The heating is nonexistent. The reason is that the rest of the year is so hot that the locals enjoy a bit of cold. Night temperatures were around zero celsius, during the day around 8 to 10.

The main commercial activities include tourism, carpets and fabrics, farm produce, handicrafts, service trades and light engineering.

Located there is the Golden Temple and the spiritual and cultural centre of the Sikh Religion. The Golden Temple is also known as Temple of the Lord. The temple is surrounded by a pool, which gives the city its name Amritsar, the pool of nectar. The glittering golden domes of the temple are reflected in the pool, and a marble pathway leads to the temple. The temple domes are covered with 400 kilograms of gold.

The Jallianwalah Bagh area of the city was the scene of the Amritsar Massacre in 1919, when the British Gen Dyer ordered troops to fire on a crowd agitating for self government 379 were killed and 1 200 wounded The first Amritsar massacre took place in the Jalianwala Bagh, an enclosed park, in April 1919. Hundreds of Indian nationalists were killed and thousands wounded when troops under British control fired upon them. The second massacre occurred June, 1984, when Indian troops, opposing a militant Sikh separatist movement, shot their way into the Golden Temple, killing more than 400 people inside.

Khalsa College, a branch of Punjab University is in Amritsar.

The main festival which is celebrated all over all Amristar is a religious festival in which people bath in rivers and worship at temples.

Such an interesting place to see and enjoy. One trip here and you will never forget it as it is so unique. Come see for yourself any time of year.

Past Cherry Festival Parades
By: naginaw | 23-08-2008
I'm really searching for both a year and a copy of a picture.  I have a completely restored 1967 Ford Galaxie Convertible that originated in Traverse City.  I was told at the time I purchased the car that one year "The Cherry Queen" had riden in it for one of the parades.  That was 5 years ago when restoration of the car began.  The color of the car was, and still is, a light blue.  I failed to make note of the information and now would like to document same, if in fact it's true.  Any information, or links regarding this request, would be more than appreciated. Thanks to anyone in advance that may glean some light on this request. Gordon Converse     --   Elk Rapids, MI
