Positioned in the main street of Auckland City, the Town Hall is a historically acclaimed building which is distinguished for its use of administrative functions. The town hall is also well known for its Great Hall and Concert Chamber. Its neighbouring area is extremely protected as a 'Category A' heritage region in the city.
The Concert Chamber is an excellent setting for any type of music. It can seat a maximum number of 497 people over two levels. Known as Auckland's first venue for fine music and orchestral performances, The Great Hall is able to accommodate 1,673 people theatre-style on three levels.
Opened by then Governor General of New Zealand, Baron Islington on December 14th 1911, the Town Hall is one of the most outstanding heritage structures located on Queen Street. The five-storey Town Hall was planned to fit the wedge-shaped piece of land which was obtained for it at the special meeting of Queen Street and Grey Street.
The interior of this outstanding Town Hall was broadly restored during the period of 1994-1997. The partial restoration cost nearly 33 million NZ$. This restoration was executed mainly due to the fact that the unreinforced masrony structure did not comply with the standards of earthquake. It was only during restoration that the unique Proscenium Arch of the Concert Chamber and the stunning oval stained-glass windows were rediscovered. The exterior of the building also went through some recent restoration work.
The Town Hall roof is about 60 feet high. One of the main features at the Town Hall is its Organ which is the biggest musical instrument in the country. The Organ is according to New Zealand law ‘A Protected Object'.
This significant heritage site reflects true Edwardian elegance. This exceptional Auckland Town Hall is open to its visitors from 9.30am to 4.30pm on weekdays and 10.00am to 4.30pm on weekends. Travellers can plan their stay at any of the nearby Auckland hotels. Most of the Auckland luxury hotels are well known for offering and impeccable service together with warm hospitality. Langham Hotel Auckland is also a great choice for those interested in exploring the magnificent Auckland Town Hall.
