Andalucia Holidays in Huelva
While enjoying your Andalucia holidays and looking for places to visit, take a trip to Huelva which is the furthest west you can go in the Andalucia holiday rentals and borders Portugal. It's also the least visited by tourists even though its coastline filled with miles of unspoilt and uncrowded beaches of golden sand. All forms part of the Costa de la Luz ("Coast of Light"); rich in maritime history it was from here that Christopher Columbus prepared for trip to the New World. Apart from Columbus, Huelva has the Parque Nacional de Donana, one of Europe's most important wetlands with sand dunes, marshes, pine woods, salt flats, lagoons and the incredible amount of wildlife that lives here. While, in the north, there is the Parque Natural Sierra de Aracena y Picos de Aroche where you can take many hikes; the park is also the home of the famed cured ham of Jabugo. 90 percent of the park is a woodland paradise covered in Mediterranean oak trees, gentle rolling hills and wooded valleys, where outcrops of jagged rock and high peaks may reveal birds of prey nestling at their top. Around the sierra you'll see castles or churches surrounded by white washed towns and villages; between the towns and villages there are many walks mostly now are signposted. While walking between the towns and villages you might come across the Black Iberian Pig foraging for acorns that gives its ham that very distinctive flavour.
Make sure that when you reach the Andalucia holiday rentals town of Jabugo you seek some out from one of the bars there as this is the most famous village where the majority of the ham comes from. If you happen to be here in spring, which with all the natural colours is probably the best time to holiday here, then look out for the woodpeckers pecking out their nests. In contrast is the Parque Nacional de Donana - its name comes from aristocracy and in particular Dona Ana de Silva y Mendoza who indulged herself by building a residence that was more hermitage than palace and used the area as a royal hunting ground. As a result the whole area became known as the "Forest of Dona Ana" which was shortened to "Donana". The land has passed between many households until it finally became a national park in 1969. The park is made up of three ecosystems with mobile dunes, Mediterranean scrub lands and marshland. With so many visitors and many permanent residents the area teams with wildlife, some from Africa: numerous types of geese and colourful colonies of flamingos and one of the largest colonies of Spanish imperial eagles. It's no wonder that Donana has become a key centre in the world of conservation,
For centuries this land has been shunned by people and ideally suited the wildlife that lives here; it's only now with the many villages that have sprung up in later years that the park is in danger. Rice fields and other agricultural products in the north of el Rocio and the sulphur mines at Aznalcoliar - the run-off waste products from which fill the marsh lands – are in danger of harming the area. You need permission to enter the park although there are many guided tours; book early if you wish to go through this parkland for a half day trip, or take advantage if there is a group of you for a full day and a meal at Sanlúcar de Barrameda. Both these parks are worth a visit while on your Andalucia holidays.
