Bhopal is located in India

It is located in the North West part of the state of Madhya Pradesh, in the central region of India. It lies along the slopes of a sandstone ridge, which is a part of the Malwa plateau. It is to the west of Jabalpur and to the east of Ujjain, the other two major cities of Madhya Pradesh.

The place named after the Bhoj king is Bhojpal who ruled it a thousand years ago.

Bhopal is connected by Indian Airlines flights with Delhi, Mumbai, Gwalior, Indore, Jabalpur, Raipur and Nagpur. The airport is situated about 7 km from the city centre.

Bhopal has sites which will blow your mind. The magnificent temple of Bhojpur has earned the nomenclature of the Somnath of the East is known as the Bhojeshwar temple. Dating back to the period of Raja Bhoj. This temple to this date attracts devotees of Lord Shiva in huge numbers during the Shivaratri festivities. The biggest Shiva Linga carved out of a single stone, rising to an awe inspiring height of 75 feet. Set upon a massive platform of architectural harmony of lingam and platform creates a superb synthesis of solidity and lightness. Although the temple was never completed, it still remains one of the best examples of temple architecture of the 12th and 13th centuries.

It presents a happy mix of Hindu and Islamic cultures and delicately balances both North Indian and South Indian influences as well.

Bhopal is also known as the city of lakes, and when the waters of the lake reflect the twinkling lights of the city at night, it is a sight to behold. But is also known, sadly, for the largest industrial disaster or the Gas Tragedy, struck it in 1984.

Known for its zari which is silver thread work on velvet, evening bags, jewellery, leather, bead and sequin embroidered bags and richly decorated shoes. Handicrafts and handlooms from all over are available in Bhopal.

Most shops are open 0930 to 2000 and are closed on Mondays. There are two main shopping centres.

The old city with its marketplaces and fine old mosques and palaces still bears the aristocratic imprint of its former rulers, among them the succession of powerful Equally impressive is the new city with its verdant, exquisitely laid out parks and gardens, broad avenues and streamlined modern edifices.

Its a great place to be and a great place to explore. Come any time of the year and enjoy yourself.
